Our Animals

Conserving Habitat, Preserving Balance

Book your stay

At Hay's Wood Retreat, our animals are more than just friendly faces; they are integral to the balanced ecosystem we’re dedicated to preserving. Every animal, from our Highland cows to the smallest woodland creature, contributes to the conservation and natural beauty of the retreat.

Our Highlands

Our Highland cows, with their iconic shaggy coats and calm presence, are wonderful ambassadors of our retreat’s commitment to heritage and sustainability. Their grazing patterns help to maintain our grassland health, naturally encouraging biodiversity across the retreat.

Our Natural Groundskeepers

Our sheep and little goat play an essential role as our "natural groundskeepers." By grazing selectively, they contribute to maintaining a healthy landscape, supporting the soil, and providing open spaces that many smaller wildlife species rely on. Rest assured though, our animals are not able to roam right up to your lodge.

Wild Neighbours

Hay's Wood is home to an array of local wildlife, including birds, badgers, and deer, whose natural behaviours create a balanced ecosystem. We’re committed to creating a safe haven for these creatures through conservation practices that sustain their habitat. Guests may see these wild neighbours from a distance and are encouraged to quietly observe the natural wonders they bring to the retreat.

A Shared Space for Conservation

All of our animals, domesticated and wild, remind us of the delicate balance within nature. We invite our guests to join us in respecting this balance by keeping a respectful distance and helping us ensure Hay's Wood remains a sanctuary for these special creatures.

Surrounded by beautiful nature, lakes, new and modern facilities. An oasis of peace and comfort! Highly recommended.
